  16.      Constructing a Chinese "Horoscope" chart isn't very complicated, but can
  17.  take about twenty to thirty minutes  of consulting tables and adding numbers
  18.  - something a computer  can  do  in  seconds.  The  original version of this
  19.  program was written for a  ZX Spectrum  and  despite loading from a cassette
  20.  (and later a Microdrive cartridge -  remember them?) you could have the hard
  21.  work over with in only a few minutes!

  23.      This  program  will  do  all   your   calculations   and  give  a  brief
  24.  generalisation, but it was only designed  as an AID to constructing Ming Shu
  25.  charts.  However,  if  all  you  want  is  a  quick  summary of your friends
  26.  characteristics this program is  ideal  (and  cheaper  than anything in your
  27.  local bookshop!).

  59.      Danger abounds this month!  No boring vectors,  no scrolling sleepiness,
  60.  just  the  cream  of  the  demo   crop.  First  up  is  Olympic Cyclist Anim
  61.  (17 Bit, 2155). From the title screen  of  this 1Mb-only animation I learned
  62.  that the UK have previously  held  the  Olympics  in  1908 and 1948. Roll on
  63.  Manchester 2000, eh?
  64.      Anyway,  I was expecting  dodgy  digitised  video-tape,  à  la mayhem on
  65.  Wheels 3. Instead I  was  pleasantly  surprised  to  see  a fully convincing
  66.  animation of the British bike which  beat  the  world  at the recent bash in
  67.  Barcelona, as ridden by Chris Boardman, complete with stupid hat.
  68.      The animation is smooth,  although as it only does one thing there ain't
  69.  exactly hours of fun here. Still, well worth a peek...

  72.   ...From spiders to frogs,  butterflies  and  killer cars!  The irreverantly
  73.  titled Savings Certificate Animation (17 Bit, 2372) follows in the footsteps
  74.  of  other  Bad  Taste-style  animations such as the quite wonderful Hedgehog
  75.  cartoon from a couple of months ago.
  76.      This time we're treated to  a complete  rip-take  of a certain insurance
  77.  company's advert on TV. It starts  with a tastefully-drawn cocoon developing
  78.  into a caterpillar, growing wings and flitting  away as an adult butterfly -
  79.  only to be harpooned by a predatory frog and his unfeasibly large tongue.
  80.      I suppose there's some kind of  perverse natural justice going on there,
  81.  but you can forget the  "natural"  and  the  "justice" bits if attempting to
  82.  explain why a car drives in, filling the whole screen and squashing the frog

  85.  SAVINGS CERTIFICATES AD - ANIMATION
  86.      Have you seen those Gary Larson ads on the telly,  the ones for National
  87.  Savings Certificates? Not as good as his original cartoons are they? Anyway,
  88.  if you do like them, you might be interested in this computerised version of
  89.  the butterfly and frog advert. The  brief  sequence has a butterfly emerging
  90.  from a cocoon, only to be  immediately  eaten  by  a stealthy frog. The smug
  91.  frog isn't smug for long though  -  a  second  later he's squashed under the
  92.  wheels of a car. Not a  side-splitter  by  any  means,  but still one of the

  95.  SAVINGS CERT ANIM - DEMO
  96.      Fans of Gary Larson will like this. Most of the rip-off animations doing
  97.  the rounds don't bother  crediting  the  original,  but  this one does. It's
  98.  based on the Larson animation used in the recent advert for National Savings
  99.  Certificates - and if you don't know who Gary Larson is, go out and look for
  100.  The Far Side books in your local bookshop.
  101.      Keith Nicholson thought the anim was so good, he had to do a version for
  102.  the Amiga. It shows a butterfly emerging  from a cocoon, where everything is
  103.  made from line-drawings except for the  butterfly itself. There's a surprise
  104.  ending which doesn't  actually  appear  in  the  original,  and  it's rather
  105.  amusing.
  106.      The graphics are all hand drawn  with  no  trace of a digitiser, and are
  107.  extremely faithful to the original, including Larson's signature. Excellent.
